Mix: Zulu Soul & Township Jive

by

This mix features the musical styles of Township Jive and Mbaqanga, which originated in rural Zulu townships in the early 1960s and went on to influence music worldwide. Both styles are closely related and found influence in western soul, funk, disco and reggae. The sound can be characterized by its distinguished high-pitched, choppy guitars which are accompanied by a heavy bass line.

All of these 45s were acquired from the 2014 WFMU record fair.
