Raï is a musical style that originated in Algeria in the 1930s that appealed to the younger generation who sought to challenge and modernize traditional Islamic values. By the 1970s raï artists were largely influenced by Western music, adapting instruments such as trumpets, electric guitar and synthesizers. The lyrical content was often regarded as controversial, although the Algerian government had a difficult time suppressing the movement due to a growing popularity within the French Maghrebi Arab community.

Listen to the lead track, “Li Maandouche L’Auto” by Bellemou & Benfissa.
