Banned in Czechoslovakia: Underground Praha (Musical Activism Under Communism, 1975-1990) Various Artists Country: Czech RepublicLabel: Oloj Records Cat#: OL-LP-01Format: Vinyl, LP CompilationYear: 2012Language: Czech Share on: Facebook Twitter Pinterest Submitted by Jeremy Phillips Rock music was banned in Czechoslovakia until the fall of the Soviet Union and this compilation brings together the underground sounds that were being created during that time. Artists during the rule would participate in illegal concerts, face interrogation by secret police as well as be subject to arrests, jail time and deportation. The compilation is a dark affair, featuring several brooding new wave songs as well as sparse avant-garde compositions. Featured on two tracks is The Plastic People of the Universe, who were one of the most successful and persecuted acts to emerge from the scene. They were heavily influenced by Frank Zappa and named the band after the lead track from his Absolutely Free album. The band remains active, last releasing an album in 2011. Listen to The Plastic People of the Universe’s “Zácpa”.
